For its annual list, LiS: Latinos in Sports spoke with Ramos about paving the way for more Latino leaders in sports, how sports empower Latino communities worldwide, and Ramos’s advice for the next generation looking to break into the industry.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the sports industry, and how has your cultural background shaped your journey?

My journey into the sports industry began with my love for radio, where I quickly discovered that there’s nothing quite like the excitement of sports on the airwaves. The energy, the real-time drama, and the deep connection with the audience drew me in. Growing up as a first-generation immigrant, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices and perseverance my parents showed in building a new life in a different country. Their strength and determination inspired me to pursue my passions fearlessly and to work hard for what I love. This background has fueled my drive, helping me to connect with diverse audiences and navigate challenges in my career with resilience and gratitude.

Which Latino athletes, executives, or leaders have inspired you the most, and why?

I’ve been deeply inspired by many remarkable figures, but I would like to highlight Roberto Goizueta and Orlando “El Duque” Hernández. Roberto Goizueta, a Cuban immigrant, became the first Cuban-born CEO of a Fortune 500 company in the United States, leading the Coca-Cola Company to unprecedented global success. His leadership, perseverance, and ability to break barriers as an immigrant showed me how far determination and innovation can take you, regardless of where you come from.

Orlando “El Duque” Hernández is another figure I admire. After being banned from playing baseball in Cuba, he fled to the US and went on to become a Major League Baseball star, winning five World Series championships. His resilience, both on and off the field, symbolizes the strength it takes to overcome adversity and still rise to the top of your profession.

In addition to Goizueta and Hernández, my father has been a profound source of inspiration. The Cuban regime seized his family’s successful businesses, yet he made the brave decision, along with my mother, to come to the United States with my two older brothers, determined to ensure they had a better future. His resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering focus on creating a better life for his children have shaped my values and drive. His story is a constant reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of family.

How are you using your platform to advocate for more representation of Latinos in leadership positions within sports?

As someone deeply rooted in the Latino community and passionate about sports, I recognize the importance of representation at all levels, especially in leadership positions. Throughout my career, I’ve used my platform to not only highlight the achievements of Latino athletes but also to advocate for more Latinos in leadership roles within the industry. Whether it’s mentoring young talent, promoting stories that celebrate Latino success, or actively participating in conversations about diversity, my goal is to pave the way for more Latinos to take on leadership positions in sports.

What role do you believe sports play in uniting and empowering Latino communities, both in the US and globally?

Sports play a pivotal role in uniting and empowering Latino communities, both in the US and globally. They serve as a shared cultural experience that transcends differences, bringing people together across generations, nationalities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. For many Latinos, sports like soccer, baseball, and boxing are more than just games; they are a source of pride, identity, and community cohesion. They offer a platform to celebrate cultural heritage and demonstrate the talent and hard work of Latino athletes.

In the US, sports have been a powerful means for Latinos to gain visibility and break down stereotypes, offering role models who demonstrate resilience, talent, and the power of hard work, empowering Latino youth to dream big and break through barriers.

Globally, sports provide Latinos with a platform to showcase their talents on the world stage, building pride within their communities and opening doors to economic opportunities. Whether it’s playing professionally or contributing through community coaching or support, sports offer avenues for social mobility and collective empowerment.

What advice do you have for the next generation of Latino leaders looking to break into and excel in the sports industry?

To the next generation of Latino leaders breaking into the sports industry: Follow your dreams with passion and determination. There will be obstacles along the way, but don’t let them stop you from achieving what makes you happy. Your unique background and experiences are your greatest strength, so use them to your advantage.

Surround yourself with diverse people, as this will help shape you into a more versatile and well-rounded person. Embrace learning—whether it’s another language or understanding multiple sports. The more you offer, the more opportunities you’ll find. Continue to build a strong network of mentors and allies who can guide and support you.

The sports industry requires persistence, resilience, and adaptability. Always be ready to grow and embrace challenges. Stay true to your values and vision, and let your leadership inspire others to follow in your footsteps, paving the way for more Latinos in sports.
